Blackheart Sassafras
Sassafras, Southern Atherosperma moschatum Labill. 1 A medium-sized hardwood of the high rainfall areas of Tasmania. 2 Heartwood various shades of brown. Sapwood white or greyish. Texture fine and even. Grain straight. Usually no pronounced figure. 3 GD about 700 kg/m3; ADD about 630 kg/m3. 4 Easy to dry. Shrinkage about 2.5 per cent radial, 6.5 per cent tangential. 5 Easy to work. Good for turnery and steam bending. 6 Heartwood not of sufficient durability for exterior use. Sapwood not susceptible to lyctid borer attack. 7 Provisionally S6, SD5. Some mechanical properties are listed on page 426. 8 Turnery, brush stocks, handles, textile bobbins, shoe heels, bungs for casks, carving. Because of its very low tannin content it is the best Australian species for clothes pegs. 9 Scarce.
